Beginning with a brand new year gives everyone the chance to reflect and make a change.
Your new year’s resolutions are probably getting some traction. It’s the middle of the first month of the year, and it’s the best time to make the best changes yet.
What I like to reflect on in this time of year is how I can improve my beauty routine. And when you say improve, it’s not necessarily adding something. Sometimes, a detox is the right move.
People usually refer to a detox as something that has to do with food or alcohol, or even their lifestyle in general. However, a detox also can be done to our beauty routine.
If you’re looking to detox your beauty routine, hopefully these five tips / habits will help you achieve healthy and glowing skin for the rest of the year.
1. Make it a habit to clean. Clean your brushes and your make up containers regularly.
If you want your tools and skin to be bacteria-free, then this first tip is a good place to start. Your makeup brushes should be thoroughly cleansed at least once a week. And while you’re waiting for your brushes to dry, don’t forget to clean the containers they were stored in, too. Throw away any brush that seemed to have already shed a lot of their bristles. This means that that the brush has dry, damaged, and old fibers. This is bad for your complexion and will only give uneven makeup application.
2. Learn how to read the ingredients on products.
Always read the label before you purchase any product. Do your homework and find out what ingredients are. You should know that it’s usually a red flag when you come across products with alcohol, parabens, or strong fragrances. These are harsh chemicals that should be avoided as much as possible. And most importantly, know what ingredients are compatible with your skin, and which don’t work for you.
3. And then get rid of some products.
This is your skin we’re talking about here. Check your skincare and makeup kit and toss any products that contain harmful chemicals. It will hurt to throw out expensive cosmetics and toiletries that cost a fortune, but you are doing this for the long run. Your skin will thank you in the future. And while you’re at it, make sure you’re also getting rid of any expired makeup!
4. Try to go natural.
There are plenty of DIY skin care remedies that can be found on the internet, so why not try going natural for a change? Use natural products in your skincare routine instead of bottled up chemicals whenever you can. For one, an olive oil can be used as a makeup cleanser, and homemade coffee and sugar can be used as body scrub instead of a store bought product. Be careful to wash it all off thoroughly though!
5. Stick to your beauty routine and never miss a day!
Remember that skin care doesn’t happen overnight. Our skin needs time to show results, so don’t go switching from one product to another just because you don’t see a difference in a few days. If you have a routine in place, keep it. It needs to be religiously done every day, or every week, or every month – whichever applies. And never ever mix your products just because. Ask for the opinion of a dermatologist if you like because then that would be much more ideal. Applying a mix of formulas and chemicals at your every whim will only shock and confuse your skin.
