With all sorts of beauty products available in the market today, certain traditional home remedies have been pushed aside. Why not bring them back? If you want a better skin and hair, give this simple all natural home remedy a try. Trust me, you’re not going to regret it.
What is rice water?
It’s literally the water that is left after soaking or boiling or washing rice. It’s rich in vitamins and minerals which are an excellent source of nourishment for your skin and hair. The ancient practice was followed by women in China, Japan and Southeast Asia as an elixir for hair care.
How do you make rice water?
Fermented rice water is known for having vitamin B which also happens to promote melanin production for hair. In old times, women used to mix a few other natural ingredients like tea seeds and ginger for a fortifying shampoo. But you could make the recipe that suits you!
You could make it the traditional way by soaking about half a cup of uncooked rice in water for about 15-30 minutes or overnight (depending on the time you have) and then strain before using. A couple of drops of essential oil like rosemary, lavender or geranium would be a good addition in the solution if you feel the smell might be too much for you.
Next, you could make it by boiling the rice. Prepare the rice as you would normally do and then strain it out once the rice is ready. The water that’s left would be milky white and is rich in essential nutrients. You can also add essential oil to this recipe but only after the water has cooled.
Lastly, you could add half a cup of uncooked rice to water and then some slices of ginger, tea seeds and orange peel (to lighten the smell of the rice water). Pour this solution into a ceramic or earthen container and then close the lid tightly shut. Allow the mixture to ferment at room temperature for about 10 days. After 10 days, your rice water is ready and can be used as a shampoo! Just apply some amount over your hair, let it sit for 10-15 minutes and then rinse it out with water.
What beauty benefits does rice water have?
Rice water is rich in vitamins and minerals which are like super food for your skin. It’s also a great anti-oxidant, thanks to the presence of ferulic acid. The magic water can be used as a facial cleanser or a toner to minimise pores and tighten skin. Rice water can give you a radiant, supple skin if you use it regularly. It can also be used to treat acne as it has the ability to heal the skin and help control an outbreak. Cold rice water will also help damaged skin heal faster because of its anti-inflammatory properties present in the water. Using a cotton swab soaked in rice water, apply it to your face if you want to use it as a cleanser or a toner. You can use a cotton ball, a cotton pad, or even use a sprayer.
Rice water also has the ability to strengthen, maintain elasticity and reduce surface friction in hair. You can use your water to rinse your hair, or as a conditioner or shampoo. It will add shine and help it to stay strong and healthy. You could use it as a last rinse after you’ve shampooed your hair. Pour the liquid over your hair, massage your scalp and rinse with plain water. Use it once or twice a week. For more nourishment, you could also leave it in your hair for 10-15 minutes and rinse as you normally would.
