Dark lipstick is just as timeless as the classic red lipstick, and believe me, it’s here to stay!
I personally love wearing a bold lip color when I’m feeling fierce, and when I’m not feeling as fierce, it gives me that boost of confidence. However, if you want to wear bold lipstick like a pro, there are actually some do’s and don’t to achieve the best dark lipstick look. If you want to know how to wear dark lipstick, keep reading!
1. First, exfoliate!
Dark lipstick shades can be tricky. Even the most premium of brands can sometimes leave you with patchy and dry lips if you don’t have a smooth base, and I know you know what I mean! The best way to insure that you are getting the best color payoff from your lippie is to prime the surface first. Scrub your lips but you don’t have to use something expensive from the drugstore. Good ol’ raw sugar, honey and coconut oil will do just fine. Mix up these ingredients until you have a nice thick paste to work with. Rub the paste in circular motions on your lips. This should remove the dead and dry skin on your lips, leaving you with a perfectly smooth surface for any dark lipstick.
Having moisturized and plump lips is always our goal, but if you want to rock a dark and matte shade, keep the moisture to a minimum. After scrubbing your lips, apply thick lip balm and finish the rest of your makeup. By the time the rest of your face is done, your lips should have absorbed most of the moisture from the balm. Wipe off all the excess balm and all moisture completely from your lips before applying lipstick. This will help give the lipstick a perfect surface to cling to, making it last longer.
3. Your skin tone matters.
Complimenting your skin tone with the right shade of lipstick is important. Blue toned lipsticks look great for deeper shades but they can really wash out pale ladies. Lighter skin tones can really benefit from a deep red or cherry shade. A great lipstick option for all skin tones is one that has an orange undertone. If you are a more olive tone, look for dark plum and merlot shaded lipsticks.
A common mistake made when rocking the dark lipstick is pairing it with a dark smoked out eye. If you’re living for the gothic look or high fashion editorial, then do it! But, if you are looking for a more wearable look that can transition from day to night, balance it out. Apply something like a flesh or skin toned shadow over the lid with a pop of highlight in the inner corner and layer on your mascara. Even without bold eyeshadow, long and luscious lashes will make your eyes still stand out. Once your eyes are toned down, feel free to go as wild as you want with that bold lip color!
5. A lip brush might be the hero you never knew you needed.
We get that bottom lip perfectly shaped and filled and right when we hit the bow of our lip, everything just turns ugly. This is even harder for those ladies with a prominently smaller top lip. If you have a big set of makeup brushes, chances are you will have one of these handy brushes in your kit already. The super defines tip will not only give you accuracy but much more control.
6. Don’t be afraid to top it all off with a little shimmer.
I wouldn’t recommend topping off your dark lip look with a gloss, but I would suggest wearing some glitter. But I’m not talking about the chunky glitters you wore back in high school! Use finely milled shimmer adds a touch of dimension and shine to your lips that only pump up the glam when it hits the light.
7. Clean up your edges.
Lipstick is messy, no matter how light or dark. Once you have your lipstick applied and shaped, use some concealer to clean up the edges. Then take a piece of tissue paper and place it over your lips. Making sure not to press too hard, so you don’t move the lipstick, gently pat some translucent powder over the tissue paper. This will set the lipstick, just like how you set your foundation in place.
